Some Thoughts on Yin

We live in a world where we are constantly being bombarded with information. Many people may have a difficult time calming the mind and the body. The overstimulation that surrounds us all can contribute to feelings of anxiousness and tension.

Yoga is a great way to increase strength, flexibility, and balance. The mind and body connection in yoga gives people the opportunity to look within and to work through the stresses that can influence our mental and emotional wellbeing. With a Yin practice you may find that you can reap even greater benefits on a mental and emotional level.

Yin yoga focuses on holding poses for longer periods of time than a typical yoga class. By holding the poses longer you can help improve the strength and flexibility of the connective tissues. You may also notice an improvement of the circulation within the connective tissues as well.

While in the pose (asana) you will have an opportunity to focus on your breathing and coming to stillness. By focusing on your breath work your body will relax into the pose and you may feel your body soften and settle deeper into your mat. You may be encouraged to let go of any negative feelings or emotions that you may observe as you hold the poses.

The slowness of the Yin practice is a great way to allow your body to become calm and still. By creating space and allowing the body to open you may notice an increase in the sense of well being long after the practice is done.
